Idea Channel - Is Sad Music Actually Sad?
Be it Elliott Smith or Queen, classical or dub step, there’s usually a clear understanding that some songs are sad, and some songs are happy. But what is it about the music that makes us feel these feelings we’re feeling? You might think it has something to do with the notes or how our brain’s natural response to these sounds, but you’re wrong. Or at the very least incomplete in your thinking. We’ve just been culturally trained to respond to music in certain ways because if you ignore the lyrics, music itself doesn’t actually contain any emotion at all. Watch the episode to find out more!
via PBS Idea Channel.
I’ve always wanted to know why we feel certain emotions when we hear music. In a way, it comes down to, our brains interpreting changes in air pressure, just like a beautiful painting is just our brains interpreting light frequencies. They can be different to everyone, but there seems to be certain sounds and colors that effect everyone almost universally.
As someone who comes from an art degree background, and if we look at it the way I just said (brain interpreting stimuli) then perhaps it’s ALL in our heads. An alien might not feel anything when it sees or hears what a human hears. And of course, like the guy in the video says, it also has to do with cultural training or happy/sad experiences.
What I wish he might have touched on, which blew my mind when I heard about it, is that our brain stores and interprets music in a different place than speech. I heard this on a special about Gabby Giffords, the senator who was shot and has had to deal with brain trauma. When they taught her how to speak again, speech therapists know they can get more words out of someone when they make them remember a song. So even if your speech center in your brain is damaged, you might be able to still sing. WHY? HOW? Kind of amazing!

This image really puts into perspective how unbelievably vast our universe is.
Each of the thousands of dots in this image is an entire galaxy containing billions of stars, revealed in a region of space called the Lockman hole, which allows a clear line of sight out into the distant universe, as seen by the Herschel Space Observatory.
Sadly, Herschel’s time has come to an end. http://bit.ly/ZJ2QdY

What happens to mercury when it is exposed to various sound frequencies? This does.
Nick Moore placed a blob of quicksilver in the path of various sound waves between 10 and 120 Hz and then pressed record. What you’re seeing here, in slow motion, are three-dimensional standing waves forming in the mercury. The higher the frequency, the more “nodes” that form.
Visit Mental Floss to see the equally awesome full-speed version.
This is awesome! The “arms” of the star-like shapes the mercury makes reminds me of when I did laser shows, and I would get “arms” of rainbows on a spiral, by gently lining up frequencies of the spinning prism inside the laser projector. It’s all wave patterns, wave interference! MATH! I love it!

Shoulding at the universe
Julia Galef from http://measureofdoubt.com explains the ubiquitous phemonemon of “Shoulding at the universe.”
via Measure of Doubt.
Two things about this:
A) I love this, and I have realized this whole way of thinking myself just a few years ago. You can’t change anyone but yourself, the world is NOT FAIR (Never say “but it isn’t fair!”) and never assume something “should” be any certain way.
B) BUT there is a little caveat here - and it’s when you hit on heinous crimes. No people SHOULDN’T judge you based on your looks, but yes, you will get far if you dress in clean clothes. BUT NO, it SHOULDN’T ever be ok to be raped because I wore a short dress. We have to draw the line and take action on CERTAIN THINGS.
No, you can’t force your brother to want to talk about a certain subject, and you can’t force your boyfriend to stop wanting to do something bad without telling him. DON’T bring up touchy subjects with your brother - be zen, accept it. TALK to your boyfriend about what he does that bothers you, or date someone else - relax, be zen, accept it.
NEVER ACCEPT murder, rape, grand theft, abuse, etc, because those things we SHOULD force change about. Those things we SHOULDN’T allow, and as a society SHOULD keep those people away from the general population.
It’s about moderation, balance and when to get involved. I 100% agree with this video, because “Shoulding at the Universe” is generally futile. Yeah it SHOULDN’T rain on your wedding day, but you can’t control that, and you need to relax and thank your lucky stars you have someone who loves you and wants to marry you. But under no uncertain terms SHOULD someone ever get away with murder. That’s when you have to get proactive.
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.

the future isn’t looking too bright Bill =/.
Sorry for the rant, but EVOLUTION NEVER FUCKING SAYS WE COME FROM MONKEYS. IT STATES WE AND PRIMATES HAVE A COMMON ANCESTOR, BUT WE DO NOT COME FROM PRIMATES AND PRIMATES DO NOT COEM FROM US. WE SHARE SIMILARITIES, AND EVOLUTION SAYS WE DERIVED FROM THE SAME ANCESTORS.
I’m sorry, I just get so fucking annoyed when people rant about the whole “evolution says we come from monkeys so why do we still have monkeys omg that means evolution is fake!” spiel. Rant over. Goodnight.

Dear sweet Darwin, those facebook posts/comments made my blood pressure rise.
THESE PEASANTS WILL PAY FOR THEIR INSOLENCE.
I’m still very sorry for how Ottawa presented itself to you, Bill.
SERIOUSLY, PEOPLE ARE SO STUPID. I mean, scientific literacy of the world today SCARES ME. Like, the amount of morons out there literally scares the ever loving crap out of me.
AND FYI, NO ONE IS REALLY LOOKING FOR THE “MISSING LINK” BETWEEN APES AND HUMANS ANYMORE. THEY HAVE REALLY OBVIOUS AND CLEAR SKELETAL REMAINS OF ALMOST EVERY STEP BETWEEN APES AND US.
People like these are uneducated, and it saddens me so much to think that their religious beliefs would keep them from educating themselves.
If you don’t believe in evolution, maybe you shouldn’t get that flu shot this year that we designed by looking at viral evolution Or enjoy those crops that you eat at the store that were genetically designed because we knew about evolution. Or the lactose intolerance of non-Scandinavians, because they haven’t evolved the enzymes to process dairy sugars.
SERIOUSLY. SCIENTIFIC LITERACY IS EVERYTHING.
